Basetsana Kumalo (nee Makgalemele)
Basetsana Kumalo (nee Makgalemele) is a founder member of UniPalm and was one of the principal drivers in securing the broad-base stature of the company. Born in Soweto she gained prominence when crowned the first Black Miss South Africa, after which she became the first runner-up in the Miss World Pageant.
During her reign as Miss South Africa, she gained the respect of the nation, having spent time and energy on important issues such as community upliftment projects and
fund-raising. She gained experience in business through her work in the television/media industry (Top Billing) and with Revlon Realistic Hair Care. She also received an honorary scholarship from the President of South Africa - Mr Nelson Mandela - to pursue her studies overseas and established Tswelopele Productions. Basetsana established her credentials firmly in the business sphere through further successful launches of her own clothing, cosmetic and optical (sunglasses) ranges.
Basetsana, through her efforts in business and her involvement in social projects, has been nominated for various achievement awards and occupies Board positions on a number of highly respected companies and organizations.
